Instructions

Brew the Perfect Cuban Coffee (Café Cubano)

  • A true Cuban breakfast is incomplete without a strong, bold cup of Cuban coffee. This method creates the signature espuma (sweet frothy top) that makes café Cubano so special.
  • Fill a stovetop espresso maker (Moka pot) with water and finely ground espresso.
  • Brew over medium heat until rich, dark espresso starts to flow.
  • While the coffee brews, place sugar in a small cup. As soon as the first drops of espresso appear, mix them vigorously with the sugar to create a thick, caramel-colored espuma.
  • Pour the rest of the brewed coffee over the espuma, stir gently, and serve immediately.

Make the Classic Cuban Toast (Tostada Cubana)

  • Crispy, buttery Cuban toast is the perfect companion to café Cubano.
  • Slice Cuban bread in half lengthwise.
  • Spread a generous layer of softened butter on each piece.
  • Toast on a hot griddle or sandwich press until golden brown and crispy.
  • Serve warm, and enjoy by dipping it into your café Cubano for an authentic experience.

Prepare Huevos a la Habanera (Cuban-Style Eggs)

  • This classic egg dish is simple but packed with bold, savory flavors.
  • Heat olive oil or butter in a small skillet over medium heat.
  • Sauté minced garlic for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  • Stir in tomato sauce, smoked paprika, and onion powder, letting the flavors meld for 2 minutes.
  • Crack two eggs directly into the sauce and cover the skillet.

Cook until the egg whites are set but yolks remain slightly runny, about 3-4 minutes.

  • Season with salt and black pepper, and serve with Cuban toast.
  • Cook the Sweet Plantains (Maduros) – Optional
  • For a touch of natural sweetness, caramelized plantains make the perfect side dish.
  • Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
  • Slice ripe plantains diagonally into thick pieces.
  • Fry for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and caramelized.
  • Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with cinnamon for extra warmth.

Serve with Fresh Tropical Fruits or Fried Yuca

  • To complete your Cuban breakfast feast, add a side of fresh papaya, mango, or pineapple for a refreshing contrast, or prepare fried yuca for a hearty addition.
